Freight Best Practice Publishes Fuel Saving Trial Guidelines

The Department for Transport's freight operations initiative - Freight Best Practice - has released a guide this month, which outlines a simple 12 step process that a transport operator can follow to implement a fuel efficiency intervention within their fleet.

Freight Best Practice recognise that "an effectively run trail can help determine if an intervention is relevant to your operation. Interventions can involve varying degrees of capital expenditure and it is very important to ensure such investments are made wisely and will really maximise the efficiency of your fleet."

One such intervention that is discussed within the guide is implementing a telematics, fuel saving solution. EcoTrak fuel saving technology, from CMS SupaTrak, is recognised in two of the case studies within the guide as significantly reducing a fleet's fuel costs.

In the new "Fuel Efficiency Intervention Trials" guide, both Boarhunt and Norfolkline explain how they have used the technology to monitor and manage driver behaviour, fuel usage and ultimately improve their operational efficiency.

By increasing their average miles per gallon by just 1 MPG, Boarhunt save over £500,000 per annum across their fleet of vehicles, using EcoTrak technology.

The new guide highlights areas for consideration for businesses contemplating whether or not to trial such technology.
