PDATRAK OFFERS BETTER WAYS TO SUPPORT LONE WORKERS

With growing responsibilities to their lone workers prompted by health & safety legislation and a desire to employ best practice at all times, increasing numbers of employers are looking for new ways to help identify, monitor and manage the risks they face.

It is not an easy task as the risks vary from job to job, by location and by time of day.

Amongst various measures implemented in a bid to keep lone workers safe, one proven to be the most successful is regular contact between the manager and/or the task scheduler within the company.

There are a number of ways this may be achieved, the most convenient of which usually involves some kind of portable communication device, either carried covertly or overtly with them at all times.

CMS SupaTrak, which developed the UK's leading vehicle tracking system, has taken lone worker protection to the next stage with its provision of an innovative range of solutions that can be combined as required into a single service supported by a PDA.

Using PDATrak it is possible to track lone workers wherever they may be, provided the PDA is switched on and on their person. Their constantly updated location is displayed on the SupaTrak mapping system, which is simply accessed from the web by any computer with a broadband connection and a password.

Vital in the event that a lone worker needs to be contacted or located in the event of an emergency, PDATrak can also provide a range of panic devices customised to suit the needs of each individual customer and based on their required activation criteria, communication preference and device positioning stipulation.

Customers, for example, can opt for panic devices that activate when the PDA is tapped three times, which sends a text message to a designated number advising an emergency situation. The pre-designated recipient then refers to the SupaTrak mapping system to quickly determine exactly where they are - locations are updated every 60 seconds - before deploying the necessary resources to render assistance.

Another option opens a voice channel when the panic switch is activated. This enables the recipient to hear what is happening at the lone worker's location, which may be especially useful if the contact needs to be made covertly.

And for customers whose lone workers visit unsafe places or regularly encounter adverse situations, there is an option to place the panic switch discreetly inside the vehicle.

Finally, PDATrak makes it possible to automatically activate alarms if there is no activity for a specified period, or if an agreed time for communication is not met.

Customers use PDATrak in the most flexible way to meet their needs, so the system can be just as useful to a site construction engineer as to a district nurse or security guard. Hampshire County Council, for instance, has equipped 50 of its Community Support Offices and a number of Trading Standards Officers with PDATrak.

When compliance is required and risk mitigation is paramount, lone worker solutions can reduce the impact of incidents or even prevent them for happening in the first place. If they do, systems like PDATrak will help provide the vital evidence that may be required in the event of subsequent criminal proceedings. But in any event, they are guaranteed to help improve moral, motivation and productivity amongst those doing some pretty lonely jobs.
